I joined the Prison Service in 1995, at HMP Coldingley after a break of two years from serving in the Armed forces. Whilst at Coldingley I took up the role as the first aid instructor. I then moved up North to HMP Acklington in April 199, where I completed the NVQ Level 2 and 3 in custodial care. I then went on and completed the D32/33 assessor’s course.
When I heard about the Union Learning Reps, I decided that if it was going to benefit staff and with me having an unorthodox approach that it would be the ideal course for me.
Since taking up the course for the ULR in September 2005, and managing to convince three other officers to join as a ULR, we were then successful in gaining funding from the TUC to carry our learning needs surveys. We now have a Learning Centre and hope to be delivering training courses before the end of the year.
None of this would have been possible without the help of Beth Farhat (TUC), Andy Rowett and all the ULR’s within the Prison Service and those that I have met since the first ULR course. |
