The Stu Fisher POA Learning Centre
The Learning Centre at HMP Norwich was first opened on the 14th march 2005. It is situated at the rear of the staff mess, has full disabled access and is outside of the two secure complexes at Norwich, so is open for all staff and family members.

The Centre Manager is Patrick Setters a serving prison officer who is seconded to the POA for three days a week and has been granted permission from his Prison Governor to work in the centre for the two days he is in the employ of the Prison Service. This is an important point to make as it shows the commitment that HMP Norwich is making to the setting up and continued success of the overall project. Patrick is assisted by Dave Barber who is employed as Learner Support. Dave is not a Prison Officer but has had many years experience teaching Adults

The centre can provide support and tutoring for essential skills in Numeracy, Literacy and I.T. all up to Level 2.

At present the prospectus of courses available through the centre are as follows.

Tash is a 19 year old mother of two who came to the centre to improve her prospects for future employment as she is currently unemployed. Her mother works at Norwich prison and so advised her to come and see us.

After our first conversation, we ascertained that she had not completed her GCSEs due to being heavily pregnant at the time. She had a clear vision as to what she wanted to ultimately do for a career but was aware that she needed to gain her level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy.

After running initial diagnostic assessments with her, she was already at a clear level 1 for both aspects of Basic Skills.

She has now received tutoring and is at a level 2 for both. She is currently waiting to sit the National Tests and we have put in contact with the appropriate people at Norwich City College in order for her to access the qualifications in Child Care that she wishes to undertake next.

Her confidence levels have increased no end since embarking on her learning through the learning centre and she says that she wants to provide herself as a strong role model for her children as they grow up.
