Test The Prison PDF Print E-mail

In partnership, the POA and the Prison Service will be taking the initiative test the prison out to all establishments.

What is test the prison?

The scheme involves encouraging and facilitating the workforce to take a mini-skills assessment, this will then give not only an overview of the levels of numeracy and literacy within the workforce but will also identify individuals with a skills need. POA Learning will then offer quality information, advice and guidance and open up opportunities to access learning and develop themselves both professionally and personally.

How will it run?

·        The date will be agreed at least a month in advance with the Prison Service, POA learning, governor and branch committee. If possible this should be on a training shut down day, or a mutually agreeable date where the majority of staff will be available.

·        ULR’s branch committee and training departments to be briefed as to the process and what will happen.

·        The event will be advertised across the establishment with flyers, intranet adverts, posters, staff meetings, branch meetings etc. ULR’s will be identified as key advisors if any staff have queries.

·        On the day ULR’s and POA learning staff will host the event and look to engaging all staff in the initiative. A prize draw will be done and all who participate will be entered.

·         The sessions will be confidential with a ULR, individual results will be kept private by POA learning. The prison service will be issued with anonymous copies of the results; this will provide them with an overview of the levels of literacy and numeracy in the service.

·        POA learning will use the results and follow up potential learners to up skill staff.

·        The event will then be evaluated and feedback given to all parties, an article will be written and published in both Gatelodge (POA magazine) and Prison Service News.

The dates of the upcoming events are below, for further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

EASTCHURCH LEARNING CENTRE

FIRST - MONTHLY NEWS LETTER

I am so pleased to inform you all that I have now taken up my post as the Eastchurch Learning Centre Manager.  I am very keen to make a success of the learning centre and I really hope the centre can offer you all something valuable.

The POA Learning came into existence in 2003.  The main aims of the project are to provide access to life long learning opportunities for all Criminal Justice staff, supported by an active network of union learning reps.  We will help improve literacy, numeracy, communication and IT skills; ensuring staff and their families have access to quality learning opportunities.

I will be publishing a monthly newsletter in the last week of each month updating you all with the Learning Centre’s past months activities and the classes and courses on offer for each forthcoming month.  I would like to stress that the centre is for all staff and your families.

Although we don’t have a dedicated learning centre yet the Governors and the CEO are very supportive and are working hard to find us accommodation.  Meanwhile we have been offered various locations.
