Princess Anne visits HMP High Down Union learning centre PDF Print E-mail

Wednesday, January 18th 2006 arrived with rain, grey skies and gusts of wind but when HRH Princess Anne, The Princess Royal arrived by helicopter at the gates of HMP High Down, the staff felt that the sun was shining at last.

The Princess Royal had come to officially open the High Down Union Learning Centre. This centre is a union led initiative to help to refresh the skills or to up-skill staff in the workplace. High Down Union Learning Centre is the eighth centre to open for prison workers and their families in England and Wales. Andy Rowett is the Project manager.

Her Royal Highness was greeted initially by Mr. Patrick Evelyn, Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey who presented in order

  • Mr. David Hypher, High Sheriff of Surrey
  • Mrs. Angela Fraser, Vice Chairperson of Surrey County Council
  • Cllr. Mrs. Frances Dixon “The Worshipful Mayor of Reigate and Banstead”
  • Mr. Crispin Blunt, M.P. Reigate and Banstead
  • Mr. Brian Russell, Detective Superintendent Surrey Police
  • Mr. Peter Dawson Governor of High Down Prison

Mr. Dawson presented

  • Mr. Colin Mc Connell, Area Manager Prison Service
  • Mr. Ian Murray, Governor HMP Downview
  • Mr. Colin Moses POA National Chair
  • Mr. Brian Caton, General Secretary Union
  • Mr. Steve Gough, National Vice Chair

The Official welcome was taken by Governor Peter Dawson and speeches were made by Colin Moses, National Chairman, The Professional Trades Union for Correctional and Secure Psychiatric Workers and Nick Edwards who is the Director of the School of Vocation at Lewisham College, the education provider for the Learning Centre.

OSG Jackie Burke and Officer Kerry Steptoe, two learners on the Deaf Awareness course at the centre, welcomed the guests and staff by showing off their new skills in Sign Language. This went down a treat with the staff who are now asking to attend the course.

After the unveiling of the plaque and a short speech by HRH Princess Anne, afternoon tea was served. Tutors and staff attending Courses in Customer Care, I.T. and Digital Photography, Deaf Awareness, Spanish and Stress management were delighted to meet the Princess on her walk about. Staff were surprised how well informed the Princess was about learning in the workplace and her witty comments and stories for each group were hilarious.

A true professional, not only did The Princess put everyone at their ease but she actually spoke with everyone too. The staff are still talking about the day they met the Princess. They found the Princess very relaxed and felt that she was interested in them.

Al Crisci, Catering Services Manager at HMP High Down and his team prepared the afternoon tea. Richard Davies designed the menu below.
